Carbon dioxide is a colorless, odorless and chemically inert gas that is both readily available and electrically non-conductive. It extinguishes fire primarily by lowering the level of oxygen that supports combustion in a protected area . The mechanism of fire suppression makes carbon dioxide extinguishing systems highly effective, require minimal clean up, but shall be used only in normally unoccupied areas. Carbon dioxide fire extinguishing systems can be designed with total flooding or local application approaches. Systems are generally used to protect normally unoccupied generator rooms, shipboard machineries rooms, flammable stores, transformers etc. Systems models available with UL (Underwriters Laboratories) listing, FM (Factory Mutual) approved, major marine classification type approval.
